The GRTV Media Preservation Suite, a service of the Grand Rapids Community Media Center, hosts the only public-facing, DIY media preservation suite in the Midwest equipped with a professional, archival-grade analog signal chain for VHS/S-VHS, including professional VCRs, TBC with frame sync, and lossless digital transcoder. We're also the region's only lab providing community DIY access to FireWire bitstream transfer for MiniDV and DVCam tapes, preserving original tape metadata. Our mission is to democratize access to archival preservation by bridging the gap between high-end digitization standards and public accessibility, putting institutional-grade hardware normally restricted to museums and universities directly into the hands of the community. Access to the Media Preservation Suite is completely free to members following a low-cost certification ($40 annual membership + $40 one-time certification fee). Certified members enjoy ongoing access to all preservation offerings (VHS, DV, compact audio cassette, reel-to-reel audio, digital optical disc formats, and transparency scanning) as well as consultation from staff.

My primary interest in physical media is in the realm of used blank VHS/Betamax tapes containing television broadcasts with original commercials from the 80's through the early 2000's. I buy tapes from all over and I share as much as I possibly can in full on my youtube channel. I share shorter stuff on instagram and facebook like individual commercials and teasers for my youtube uploads. I don't really trade, if I have something you want I will just give it to you. I have quite a bit that I can't share on youtube so let me know if you're looking for anything I may have come across. Ultimately I would like to help and encourage people who are curious about getting into hunting/collecting tapes and digitizing them. I hope to eventually start livestreaming my entire process to help show how easy it really is to do all of this. If you are interested in starting a similar channel to share your findings I'd be happy to provide you with advice and tips to help you navigate copyright concerns and the youtube contend ID system, etc. I have a professional background in graphic design, video production, editing and social media management so I do all of this myself as a hobby and a passion project -- no AI whatsoever. I do not believe in gatekeeping, I will share all of my secrets with you.

Killer Video is a nonprofit museum committed to the preservation, study, and celebration of physical media, with a specialized focus on horror cinema and the VHS era. Our mission is to safeguard the cultural legacy of analog video formats—particularly VHS—by building a living archive of rare and at-risk materials, fostering media literacy, and creating opportunities for public engagement through exhibitions, screenings, and educational programming. At a time when streaming and digital convenience dominate the landscape, the physical media that once defined how we experienced film is rapidly disappearing. Killer Video exists to ensure that the history, aesthetics, and communal rituals associated with analog video are not lost, but instead reexamined, appreciated, and actively preserved. We focus on horror not only because of its vibrant subcultural roots and devoted fanbase, but also because it was a genre that thrived—often uniquely—on home video, allowing independent filmmakers, regional productions, and experimental works to find audiences beyond the mainstream. Killer Video’s programming includes curated screenings of both well-known and obscure films, historical exhibitions that explore the design, marketing, and cultural context of horror on video, and community events such as filmmaker panels, live commentary screenings, and design contests that celebrate VHS-era aesthetics. Through these efforts, we provide a platform for contemporary artists, designers, and filmmakers to engage with the past while building new creative connections to the present. Our archival work centers on collecting, cataloging, and maintaining a growing collection of VHS titles, promotional materials, original artwork, and supporting ephemera. These items are preserved both as historical artifacts and as experiential media—objects meant to be seen, handled, and, where possible, played. Our long-term goal is to build a comprehensive and publicly accessible catalog that not only serves researchers and scholars, but also invites casual fans to explore the forgotten corners of analog horror history. In addition to our permanent collection and rotating exhibitions, Killer Video maintains a fully operational in-person video rental library. This allows us to foster direct interaction with the medium, encouraging audiences to experience the format as it was originally intended: as a tactile, curated, and often communal event. As a public institution, Killer Video is dedicated to inclusive access and lifelong learning. We partner with filmmakers, educators, designers, and archivists to ensure that our programs reflect the full range of voices that have shaped—and continue to shape—the genre. We believe that the preservation of media history is an act of cultural responsibility, and we approach that responsibility with equal parts scholarship, creativity, and enthusiasm. Through all of this, Killer Video remains steadfast in its mission: to keep the strange, wonderful, and terrifying world of analog horror alive—not as a nostalgic novelty, but as a vital part of film and cultural history.

A lightweight macOS video editor specifically designed to capture, bulk clip and clean converted VHS tapes. A robust set of features enable you to do far more than just trim videos. Bulk import and export clips and apply settings across multiple clips, even multiple videos, with the touch of a button. Color correct dark or faded VHS tapes, crop out black borders captured from the original TV signals, correct audio drift and even leverage Apple's Audio Unit v3 plugin architecture to clean clicks and hums with builtin plugins or leverage plugins from 3rd parties. A custom designed commercial detection system allows you to calibrate to your specific video quality, then detect and clip commercial breaks and black frame transitions. Color code clips according to clip length and easily review and remove unwanted programming... then merge your clips back into a single video or export each clip independently. A powerful metadata report template scripting language allows you to customize the metadata you wish to track, tag videos and clips, and generate any style of report. Easily generate reports for everything from YouTube chapter markers to adding entries in your database or Excel documents. Video Barbershop is your neighborhood video barber in a world of complicated and overpriced video salons. It may not have every feature other video salons tout... but that's the point. It has what you actually want when converting, cleaning and editing VHS tapes, with simple to use controls. If you want to dig deeper, there is an advanced mode in each section, opening up extended features like keyframing... but it doesn't overwhelm you with possibilities if you are new to video editing! If all you need is a simple cut, Video Barbershop is there for you. Video Barbershop for macOS 15.5+, and the free version Video Barbershop Lite, are lovingly crafted by Joby Bednar, a VHS collector and enthusiast who made these apps for his own unique hobby of digitizing VHS tapes. This isn't something slapped together by some nameless corporation, requiring monthly subscriptions and gigabytes of drive space. This has been lovingly crafted with a heart and soul, focused on making the kind of tool needed for addressing the specific issues one faces with converted VHS. It may not replace your entire video editing pipeline... but I bet you'll find something in here that makes it a valuable addition to your pipeline! I'm a lone developer creating software for niche enthusiasts. If there's something else you wish it could do, let me know! I'd love to hear from you and continue to make this the best video editing app for VHS enthusiasts!
